World’s Longest Flight Between Cities Recorded
October 12, 2018
World’s longest flight.
Longest NONSTOP commercial passenger flight with Airbus A340-500
History was created when Singapore Airlines Flight SQ22 between the Newark Liberty International Airport and Singapore completed its journey. A flight of 17 hours and 52 minutes. It was the World’s longest commercial flight.
Previous longest direct air link between cities — Qatar Airways Flight 921 from Auckland to Doha – Took 17 hours 40 minutes.
The plane – the new and more fuel efficient Airbus A350-900ULR – tested the physical and mental limits of its 150 passengers and 17 crew members as it traveled 16,500 kilometers.
Airbus A350-900ULR is a new ultra long haul aircraft based on the A350-900.
Performance – Can fly 19 hrs or 9700nm.
25% more fuel efficient than the 777-200LR.
Boeing has, however, launched the new 777-8 to compete with the Airbus 350.
This journey marked the revival of a route that had been discontinued earlier. Singapore Airlines originally flew the route for nine years with the four-engined A340-500 plane, then abandoned it in 2013 because high oil prices made the service unprofitable.
A one-way ticket from Singapore to New York on this flight costs about USD 2,150 in premium economy and USD 3,500 for a round trip itinerary, according to the Singapore Airlines website.
