The Congress party won elections in Chhatisgarh and Rajasthan. It was a close contest with its rival Bharatiya Janata Party in MP state.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s BJ party has suffered a disheartening defeat in three key state elections in its Hindi heartland just 5 months before LS elections.

As per the results, the opposition Congress party won comfortably in Chhattisgarh state, and fell just one seat short of a clear majority in both Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. With a regional party offering support, the Congress party is set to rule all three states.

Voting in the three states was spread over the past two weeks.

The defeat to Modi’s BJP is expected to reignite the political fortunes of the Congress party under Rahul Gandhi, who took over as party president from his mother, Sonia Gandhi, more than a year ago.

India’s LS elections are due by April-May.
