India beat Ireland in a group league encounter of the ICC Women’s World T20 at Providence Stadium, Guyana.
While India batted first, they surely struggled. On a slow track, veteran Mithali (51 off 56 balls) as opener and Mandhana (33, 29 balls) were amongst the runs but the final hurrah never came. India somehow managed 145 for 6. It was more of an accumulation against a bowling attack that was never threatening.
While India bowled, its bowlers and fielders produced yet another controlled performance compared to their batters. They were bang on with their plans and despite not bowling their opponents out, they restricted Ireland to just 93 for 8 in 20 overs. The spinners did the bulk of the work and ensured Ireland never stood a chance even to give India a minor scare.
Packing the off-side field and bowling wide of stumps ensured Ireland never come anywhere near the required run rate. In such a daunting chase Ireland played 65 dot balls out of the 120 legitimate balls. This sealed the game for Ireland. Radha Yadav (3/25 in 4 overs), Deepti Sharma (2/15 in 3 overs), Poonam Yadav (1/14 in 4 overs) and skipper Harmanpreet Kaur (1/10 in 4 overs) did bulk of the damage.
With this comfortable 52-run victory, their third straight win, India with six points are now assured of a last-four spot. Australia (6 points from 3 games) have also qualified to the semis from this group.
